Areal Flood Watch

Statement as of 4:34 AM CDT on September 19, 2014

Expires 11:00 PM EDT on September 19, 2014

... Flood Watch now in effect through this evening...

The Flood Watch is now in effect for

* a portion of southeast Texas... including the following
counties... Austin... Brazoria... Chambers... Colorado... Fort
Bend... Galveston... Harris... Jackson... Liberty... Matagorda...
Montgomery... Waller... Washington and Wharton.

* Through this evening

* over the last week the area has received abundant rainfall and
more recently over the last few days much of the area has had 1
to 2 inches of rain with some isolated areas with 3 to 6 inches.
Showers and thunderstorms developed early this morning and were
nearly stationary. Scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms are expected today and the storms will easily be
capable to 2 inch per hour rainfall rates. The potential for
storms to line up and pass over the same area will be higher
today and this could lead to some areas receiving amounts of 1
to 3 inches with isolated amounts of 4 to 6 inches. This
additional rainfall will likely cause flooding again especially
street flooding. Motorists should avoid flooded roadways.

* Timing... storms were ongoing this morning and should continue
throughout the day. By late afternoon the storms should be
focused from around College Station to the Houston area and
shifting southwestward. Daytime heating could worsen the storms
and more intense rainfall rates could be possible.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to
cross safely. Vehicles caught in rising water should be abandoned
quickly. If your vehicle stalls... abandon it and seek higher
ground immediately. Rapidly rising water may engulf your vehicle
and its occupants and sweep them away. Move to higher ground.

Turn around... don't drown!
