Flood Warning, Flash Flood Warning

... Forecast flooding increased from moderate to major severity...
... This is a dangerous and life threatening situation...

the Flood Warning continues for
the Kiamichi river near Antlers
* until late Monday night, or until the warning is cancelled.
* At 3:30 am Sunday, the stage was 30.23 feet.
* Flood stage is 25.0 feet.
* Moderate flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the Kiamichi river near Antlers will continue rising to
near 36.6 feet this evening. The river will fall below flood stage
late Monday evening.
* Impact... at 37.0 feet, numerous structures become flooded along the
West Bank of Kiamichi river near Moyers. This will exceed the
flooding which occurred on April 8, 2002 when the river crested at
36.13 feet. The city of Antlers may see backwater flooding that
could close Ethel Road near Beaver Creek. This is an extremely
dangerous and life threatening situation.

Le Flore County in southeast Oklahoma...
northeastern Pushmataha County in southeast Oklahoma...
Sequoyah County in east central Oklahoma...
southeastern Cherokee County in east central Oklahoma...
southeastern Delaware County in northeast Oklahoma...

* until 730 am CDT

* at 142 am CDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
thunderstorms with very heavy rain moving into the warned area.
Around an inch of rainfall has already occurred with an additional
2 to 3 inches possible.

* Runoff from this excessive rainfall will cause flash flooding to
occur. Some locations that could experience flooding include...
Clayton... Poteau... Sallisaw... Stigler... Stilwell... Wilburton...
Adair State Park... Albion... Arkoma... baron... Bengal... Big Cedar...
Bokoshe... brushy... Brushy Lake State Park... bunch... Cameron...
Christie... Colcord... Damon... Fanshawe... Gans... Heavener... Heavener
runestone State Park... Higgins... Howe... Keota... Kiamichi... Kinta
and Lake Wister State Park.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the Road to
unknown depths. It only takes two feet of rushing water to carry away
most sport utility vehicles and pickups. Take a different Route to
reach your destination or wait until the water recedes. Remember...
most flood related deaths occur in automobiles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding. If flash flooding is observed act quickly. Do
not enter the water. Turn around and move up to higher ground to
escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to flooding when
water begins rising.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday morning...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of east central Oklahoma... northeast Oklahoma and
southeast Oklahoma... including the following areas... in east
central Oklahoma... Cherokee... Muskogee... Okfuskee and
Sequoyah. In northeast Oklahoma... Adair... Craig... creek...
Delaware... Mayes... Nowata... Okmulgee... Osage... Ottawa...
Pawnee... Rogers... Tulsa... Wagoner and Washington. In southeast
Oklahoma... Choctaw... Haskell... Latimer... Le Flore... McIntosh...
   Pittsburg and Pushmataha.

* Through Monday morning

* widespread showers and thunderstorms continue over much of
eastern Oklahoma early this morning. Additional rounds of heavy
rain are expected through the day Sunday before shifting east
Sunday night. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will be
common with the heaviest rains.

* Widespread rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected
across much of eastern Oklahoma... especially areas along and
west of a line from Miami Oklahoma to Hugo Oklahoma. Local
amounts of 8 to 10 inches will be possible within this same
area. 5 to 6 inches of rainfall has already occurred across
southern Tulsa... Okmulgee and creek counties with numerous
secondary roads closed due to high water.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Life threatening flooding can quickly develop with these rainfall
amounts... especially near area rivers and lakes. Be prepared to
act quickly should warnings be issued for your area.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the Road
to unknown depths. Take a different Route to reach your
destination or wait until the water recedes.

If you are in the watch area... keep informed... and be ready for
quick action if flash flooding is observed or if a warning is
issued. Have a means of receiving any warnings issued overnight
such as a weather radio.
