...National Hurricane Preparedness Week...

The week of may 24th through may 30th 2015 has been declared
hurricane preparedness week. Today/S topic is hurricane history. We
will discuss significant hurricanes that have impacted central New
York and northeast Pennsylvania.

Coastal areas are not the only locations to be impacted by tropical
storms and hurricanes. Many historical storms have impacted inland
areas... far away from the coast. In addition to the high wind threat
a hurricane brings... flooding causes significant damage to areas
further inland. This holds true for New York and Pennsylvania... as
evidence by the historic storms that have affected the region.

Hurricane Hazel made landfall near Myrtle Beach South Carolina on
October 14 1954 as a category 4 storm. Hazel accelerated north into
central Pennsylvania at 60 mph... and brought sustained winds of 70
to 80 mph to the area. Binghamton New York recorded sustained winds
of 72 mph... while winds gusts to 100 mph were recorded across upstate
New York.

The following year in August 1955... hurricane connie and diane
tracked across the northeastern United States. Hurricane connie
dropped 12 inches of rain over the area on August 13th. Five days
later on August 18th... hurricane diane moved across southern
Pennsylvania bringing another 10 to 20 inches of rain. The
combination of these storms caused massive flooding along the
Delaware River and its tributaries. Nearly 200 deaths were
attributed to these two storms.

Hurricane Agnes devastated the region in June of 1972. Agnes was the
worst natural disaster to hit the United States until hurricane
Andrew in 1992. Agnes was only a weak category 1 hurricane at
landfall. The storm stalled over the area an brought widespread 8
inch rainfall amounts to central New York and northeast
Pennsylvania. Some locations reported rainfall accumulations up to
16 inches from June 20th to June 23rd. River levels rose
significantly with river flooding reported across the Susquehanna and
Chemung river basins. Agnes resulted in 73 deaths across New York
and northeast Pennsylvania. Roughly 10 billion dollars Worth of
damage was caused from this storm. Hurricane Agnes is the worst
natural disaster in Pennsylvania history.

Inland flooding also occurred during Hurricane Ivan as it moved
across the mid-Atlantic region during September 2004. Rainfall
amounts on the order of 5 to 7 inches fell across northeast
Pennsylvania and southeast New York... resulting in millions of
dollars Worth of damages. Numerous evacuations took place along with
water rescues. Countless homes and businesses were either damaged or

In September 2011 Hurricane Lee impacted the region and caused
historical flooding over central New York and northeast Pennsylvania.
Hurricane Lee made landfall over Louisiana on September 4th 2011 as
a tropical storm. This tropical storm weakened and tracked toward
the Ohio Valley region... then towards the northeast coast.
Widespread accumulations of 5 to 10 inches of rain fell from this
storm over central New York and northeast Pennsylvania. Massive
flooding occurred. Record River Heights occurred the North Branch of
the Susquehanna River in central New York. Over a billion dollars of
damage occurred from this storm.

The hurricane topics for the remainder of the week will be as

Tuesday... high winds and tornadoes.
Wednesday... inland flooding.
Thursday... hurricane forecasts and preparedness.
Friday... 2015 hurricane outlook.
