Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 2:26 AM MDT on July 29, 2014

Expires 8:00 AM EDT on July 29, 2014

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued an

* Arroyo and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
northern Curry County in east central New Mexico
extreme east central Guadalupe County in east central New Mexico
southern Quay County in east central New Mexico

* until 515 am MDT

* at 222 am MDT National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
widespread heavy rain from slow moving thunderstorms along and
south of Interstate 40 between Newkirk and Tucumcari extending
to The Caprock near Ragland. The storms were slowly track toward
the east and will continue to build and expand during the pre dawn
hours. Rainfall rates will approach 2 inches per hour with the
strongest storms. Of particular concern will be high flows in
the headwaters of Alamogordo creek... as well as Bull Canyon...
Charco... Garcia and Barranca creeks. State Road 156 near The
Caprock will be especially susceptible to flooding early this
morning

* strong flows and high water levels are expected in arroyos... small
streams and over low water crossings. Rapid runoff can also be
expected immediately over and downstream from wildfire burn scars.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to tell how much
water is on the Road... do not drive through fast moving water of
unknown depth.

Both localized and distant heavy rainfall will create dangerous flows
in arroyos and over low water crossings. Do not attempt to drive
through these waters. Water in arroyos may travel many miles and take
hours to reach your location from upstream rain areas.

... Flash Flood Watch in effect until 6 am MDT Tuesday...

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has expanded the

* Flash Flood Watch to include a portion of north and central New
Mexico... including the following areas... Central Highlands...
Chaves County plains... Curry County... De Baca County... eastern
Lincoln County... Estancia valley... Guadalupe County... Quay
County... Roosevelt County... Sandia/Manzano Mountains... south
Central Highlands and southwest Chaves County.

* Until 6 am MDT Tuesday

* an upper level disturbance will shift slowly eastward across
northern New Mexico triggering showers and thunderstorms from
the Central Mountain chain eastward for the remainder of
tonight. With weak steering flow aloft and a very moist airmass
in place... slow moving thunderstorms will be capable of
producing very heavy rain and flash flooding.

* Locations where the ground is already saturated from recent
rainfall will be favored for flash flooding for the remainder
tonight. Other vulnerable locations will include steep
terrain... urban areas and burn scars. Keep a watchful eye on
arroyos and small streams... and stay out of flooded low water
crossings. Monitor the latest forecasts closely and be prepared
to take immediate action if a warning or advisory is issued.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to
flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash
flood warnings be issued.
