A record low temperature of 59 degrees was set at Jackson KY yesterday.
This ties the old record of 59 degrees in 1993.

... July saw very cool and wet conditions across eastern Kentucky...

Thanks to a number of unseasonably cool days... the Jackson weather
office and the London Corbin Airport finished last month well below
normal. Both Jackson and London ended July 2014 close to three
degrees cooler than normal. In fact... the Jackson weather office
tied for its second coolest July ever... and also set or tied
numerous cool records. The most noteworthy were tying for the
coolest July day and establishing a new minimum high record for
July. Jackson and London saw wetter than normal conditions last
month as well. The London Corbin Airport was three inches above
normal... while Jackson was just over an inch wetter.
Furthermore... London established its wettest July day... which was
also the fifth wettest day ever at London. Also... it was the 7th
wettest July at London.

The National Weather Service office near Jackson finished July
2014 with an average temperature of 72.6 degrees... which is 2.8
degrees below the normal of 75.4 degrees. The average daily high was
81.5 degrees... and the average daily low was 63.6 degrees. July 2014
tied 1984 and 1996 for the second coolest July... only behind the
70.6 degrees from July of 2009. The highest temperature for July was
94 degrees and occurred on the 13th. No maximum temperature records
were set or tied last month. The lowest temperature from July 2014
was 53 degrees on the 30th... which set a daily and monthly low
temperature record. Additional daily low records occurred on the
16th with 55 degrees and on the 17th with 54 degrees. 55 degrees on
the 29th tied the daily low record as did 59 degrees on the 25th and
31st. The minimum high of 66 degrees on the 18th established a new
monthly and daily record. Another minimum high record of 70 degrees
was set on the 29th. Two minimum high records were also tied... 74
degrees on the 16th and 78 degrees on the 17th. Another noteworthy
fact is that there were 14 days that were under 80 degrees last
month. This is the most days under 80 degrees in July... besting the
13 days from 2009.

The Jackson weather office received 5.77 inches of precipitation in
July 2014... which is 1.12 inches above normal. There were 11 days
when a hundredth of an inch or more of precipitation was
recorded... and nine days when a tenth of an inch or more fell.
There were six days when at least a half an inch of rain was
received... and two days with more than an inch. The day of the 14th
netted 1.37 inches of rain... which was the greatest daily amount for
July. The greatest amount of rainfall received in a 24 hour period
occurred on the 14th to 15th with a total of 1.69 inches. No
precipitation records were set or tied at Jackson last month. The
annual precipitation total is now 29.75 inches... which is 0.11
inches below normal.

Thunder was heard on five days at the Jackson weather office... which
is below the normal of 10.2 days for July. There were 17 days with
fog... eight of which featured dense fog. July normally averages 8.5
days of dense fog. The average wind speed for July was 2.0 mph... and
the highest wind gust of 23 mph was recorded on July 8th. The mean
wind speed for July is typically 3.7 mph.

The new heating degree day season began on July 1st. Not
surprising... but the Jackson weather office recorded 3 heating
degree days last month... which is 3 above normal for July. In
fact... July 2014 had the second most heating degree days for
July... only behind 9 from July 2009. Jackson accumulated 249 cooling
degree days last month... which is 72 below normal. The cooling
degree day seasonal total is now 727... which is 47 above normal.

At the London Corbin Airport... the average temperature was 73.6
degrees... which is 2.7 degrees below the normal of 76.3 degrees for
July. The average daily high was 83.8 degrees... and the average
daily low was 63.5 degrees. The highest temperature from last month
was 93 degrees... which occurred on the 13th. No maximum temperature
records were set or tied at London. The lowest temperature from
last month was 54 degrees on the 5th... .17th and 30th. The 54
degrees on the 30th tied the only low temperature record last month.
There was one minimum high temperature record set last month... 70
degrees on the 18th... .and one minimum high temperature record
tied... 73 degrees on the 29th.

The London Corbin Airport recorded 7.00 inches of precipitation in
July 2014... which is 2.96 inches above normal. Last month was the
seventh wettest July at London. There were 12 days when a hundredth
of an inch or more fell... and nine days when a tenth of an inch or
more of rain was recorded. London had two days with at least a half
an inch... and one day with more than an inch. The greatest daily
amount was 3.88 inches on the 14th... .which set the monthly and
daily record. Furthermore... it was the fifth wettest calendar day at
London. The greatest amount of precipitation received in a 24 hour
period was 4.23 inches from the 14th through the 15th. No other
daily precipitation records were set or tied last month.

London had 8 days with thunder last month. Also... there were 20 days
with fog... and three days with dense fog. The average wind speed for
July 2014 was 4.4 mph... with the highest wind gust of 48 mph
recorded on the 14th.

There were no heating degree days at London last month... which is
normal. The heating degree day season began on July 1st... so the
seasonal total of 0 is normal. London recorded 275 cooling degree
days last month... which is 75 below normal. The seasonal cooling
degree day total is missing due to a two day power outage at London
last month.
